Making a claim under a Medishield Integrated Plan

My friend, who is a doctor and over 70 years old, consulted me about making a claim under a Medishield Integrated Plan.

He has been insured under the IP for over 30 years. Last year, his claim for a hospital bill of $3,000 was dismissed because it was less than the Deductible.

This year, his bill for $5,000 was also rejected because the deductible had increased to $3,500 and he used $550 in Medisave.

Actually, the insurer would pay pay the difference between the bill and the deductible and co-insurance. However, this claim would go to the CPF first to offset the amount that was deducted from Medisave.

I told my friend that if he had several bills in the same year, the total amount of the bill is added together to compute the claim, because the Deductible applies only once in each year.

This is very complicated for a lay person. Even a doctor would be confused.  It is also very difficult for the insurance company to explain the mechanics to the lay person.

I do not like the complexity that comes with Medishield Life and the integrated plans. In fact, there are many other complications apart from what my friend had experienced.

My friend complained the the premium keeps going up each year and it is difficult to make a claim.

I told him that I am insured under basic Medishield Life and the premium is affordable.
I do not want to pay a much higher premium under an integrated plan and find it complicated to make a claim.
